Overview:

National Park Services documents the Idaho Falls Regional Airport operations beginning as early as 1929. The airport has multiple historic resources dating back to the beginning including the Red Baron Hangar, administrator’s cabin and beacon tower which were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as the Idaho Falls Airport Historic District. To support future development projects at the airfield, a cultural resource inventory and future historic preservation planning was conducted. In accordance with Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) guidelines, the entire airport including the historic elements (i.e., hangars, towers, lights, runways, berms/canals etc.) were reviewed. Planning for future activities addresses the maintenance and preservation of the existing structures comprising the Historic District in compliance with the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act and acknowledges the needs of the airport to modernize and serve its function for safe air travel.
