Overview:

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe selected T-O Engineers to provide design services for the rehabilitation of badly failed asphalt at the Plummer Tribal Housing Complex. Full depth replacement and cement treated base were originally the leading methods under consideration for rehabilitation of 1,690-lf of roadways. However, the geotechnical site evaluation revealed a stable base layer of large fractured basalt. The T-O team was able to develop a new road section utilizing the existing material in place with new sub-base and asphalt. A 15,600-sf parking lot was raised in elevation to allow a relatively thin gravel course to serve as a foundation for a new structural section.

Both of these design techniques resulted in a significant cost savings and lessened the impact to the residents of the housing complex. Sidewalks and handicap ramps were replaced with new ones to meet ADA requirements. Reconfiguration of storm drain structures and piping also became necessary during project design and were included in the construction documents. 27,000-sf of driveway replacements was included as a bid alternative for the Tribe’s consideration based on available funding. Following this successful project the Coeur d’Alene Tribe selected T-O Engineers for two additional projects continuing a prosperous relationship.
