State Highway 41/53 Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad Bridge

Rathdrum, Idaho

Client

Idaho Transportation Department, District 1

Construction Value:

$4.9M

Overview:

The SH 41/53 connector in Rathdrum, Idaho is a short segment of highway connecting two State highways and crossing the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad.

A study titled 'Bridging the Valley' identified the need to widen the State Highway 41/53 Burlington-Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad Bridge and roadway to four lanes. Along with the widening of the bridge and roadway it was also necessary to provide sidewalk and bike paths on both sides of the roadway to accommodate increasing highway traffic and future railroad widening.

Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), District 1 selected T-O Engineers for the design of this project as well as for the coordination of permitting and approvals from BNSF. The project also included replacement of traffic signals at the highway intersections on both ends of the project. T-O led the design and right-of-way acquisition efforts for the roadway portion of the project, working closely with the ITD Bridge Section who provided the bridge design. T-O Engineers successfully completed this project and provided the community with a safer bike path and highway intersection.
